H. Stephen Tien

 D. Eng. Candidate

NSF-NYI Graduate Research Fellow

Place of Birth: Tainan, Taiwan

Dissertation Topic:

The Arching Mechanism in Granular Material and its Application to Soil-Structure Interaction

Education:

B.S. National Taiwan University, 1990

M. Sc. M.I.T, 1996

Background:

Although Steve likes to refer to himself as “that guy who refuses to graduate”, his fellow labmates know better. Steve is one of the most productive students within the lab, which is crucial since his analysis is the most time-consuming of all the current GeoSpa projects. His fierce intelligence and sharp wit inspired Professor Paikowsky to “steal” Steve from the doctoral program at MIT. A disciple of mathematics, Steve routinely helps other GeoSpa students with various math problems and programs, including finite element analysis and MATLAB. When relaxing, Steve is found dishing the Queen to fellow students in a network game of “Hearts”.
