The
geotechnical laboratories at UMass Lowell offer the students not only a basic introduction
into soil mechanics but also advanced soil testing. The undergraduate soils
laboratory is equipped for basic soil properties tests that are simple but very effective
in demonstrating the properties of soil to the undergraduate engineer. The graduate
soils laboratory has equipment for advanced tests such as consolidation, direct shear,
tri-axial, and several instrumentation of most mechanical tests. The Civil &
Environmental Engineering structures laboratory is also available for testing using
Instron compressive/tensile machines. The following are photographs of some of the
students projects utilizing the facilities in the geotechnical laboratories.
